Zantogola is back this Spring with their 12-piece band on 6th May 2022 from 8.30pm for their residency at McQueens Theatre, Wood Green in collaboration with Collage Arts and Karamel N22 events.

Zantogola, a London-based, musical collective envisioned by drummer, percussionist and songwriter Alex Dayo. This eclectic collaboration seeks to foster an exciting, creative spirit of common purpose and community from Burkina Faso to London bringing peace and freedom to move all souls and bodies!

Alex comes from Burkina Faso, and played with the Kouledafourou National Ballet. In 1985 he founded Wountey, a collective of musicians who created a new fusion of traditional and modern music called Plenguedey. They worked together in Africa and Europe for over 20 years. Since then the project has expanded with exciting prospects ahead.

Inspired by the West African heritage of popular rhythms and songs, Zantogola masters and explores the polyrhythmic of Plenguedey music: a fusion between elements of mandingue, highlife and afrobeat with hip hop, reggae and jazz.

Zantogola mixes traditional African percussion rhythms with brass, voices, guitars, balafons and ngonis to create contemporary, reflective, joyous and highly danceable songs. Songs are sung in the West African languages Bwamu, Dioula, Bambara and Lobi, in French and English. They speak of the concerns of the black population worldwide; of their joy and their pain – but also of their reflections of contemporary life, and their place between tradition and modernity.

Zantogola will be presenting for the first time a repertory based on some of their exciting new material that is the product of processing writing and rehearsals, and has been made possible through the support of the Arts Council (Developing Your Creative Practice). There will also be some songs from their upcoming album. It’s set to be an enriching and energetic evening.

Doors open at 7pm, music starts from 8.30pm.
